The booksellers of the Seine

Their dark green boxes have shaped the image of the banks of the Seine for centuries. The booksellers are a Parisian institution, an open-air library that runs along the quays, listed by UNESCO as part of the banks of the Seine. 

An institution born in the eighteenth century

The booksellers' tradition along the Seine goes back centuries. Already present in modest form in the seventeenth century, they have multiplied to become one of the symbols of Parisian intellectual life. Today, around 200 booksellers and approximately 245 stalls run along the river over several kilometres.

 

Each box is officially allocated and designed to fit the railings of the quays. The aesthetic of the rows of dark green has gradually shaped the contemporary image of the banks. 

What you can find there

The booksellers offer second-hand books, prints, antique posters, postcards and rare bound volumes. Specialities vary from one box to the next: poetry, comics, art books, vintage magazines.

 

A spot to wander rather than to find a specific item, in the spirit of a literary stroll along the river. Opening hours follow the daylight, weather and the rhythms of each bookseller.
